Yet Another Update to my Desk

VN:F [1.8.3_1051]

…and the computers just keep coming and coming! I’m not sure what to do with them all. If you have any suggestions, let me know in the comments or as a video response. (I’d like to mod the G3, but I’m not sure what to do. I’d like to keep the G4 intact). Make sure you get your ideas out soon, because if I don’t see anything I like I’ll just do whatever I feel like.

Enjoy!

Google Universe Changing the Face of Space

Google Universe Changing the Face of Space

All knowledge and pictures of space entered wikipedia style in a Google Earth like site.

A web site would be setup similar to Google Earth / Maps / Mars / Moon. Perhaps Google would host it and help with development of the framework software which would hold user provided content.

Any user on the Internet could pull any photo or human knowledge of space from sources such as JPL or NASA. They would then use these photos, data, and knowledge to populate the Google Universe database. Thus volunteers from around the world who are interested in space would populate the database much in the same way wikipedia is populated.

Each solar system body would have:

1) Complete map of surface that users can navigate and zoom through.
2) Encyclopedic entries of the corresponding Wikipedia page could be referenced or initially redirected to.
3) List of all past, present, and future exploration missions.
4) Description of possibility of life. Mars, Europa, Titan, Encelydus, etc would have detailed entries.
5) Description of natural resources that could be useful for future robot or human base establishment or colonization of the solar system body.
6) Description of what technology would be needed to send robot or human missions to the body or to colonize it. For instance it would describe how a fission or fusion reactor could be used to support a Mars colony.

The name Google Universe would convey to people that they could navigate and explore the Solar System or Galaxy or Universe in the same way they use Google Earth or Google Maps to navigate around and explore Earth. They could zoom in and out and drag the map with their mouse to move North, South, East, and West across the surface of the solar system body via a map made of integrated photos from NASA and JPL sources.

One of the goals of Google Universe is CHANGING THE FACE OF SPACE. Letting the public surf through the rich variety of worlds in our solar system and exo-planets.

The public and government see:

- The relevancy of worlds where humans could move to in the future
- The education value of space exploration.
- Which worlds are possible for life.

People could contribute to discussion forums for each solar system body and give their opinions on how humanity should explore or settle them

While you were on a body, for instance Mars, the database would show links to an assortment of educational videos, youtube videos, Hollywood movies, and science and sci-fi novels about Mars. So the website would be the top level directory of all human knowledge and art and writing and entertainment about space and everything in it.

All the text would be in multiple languages so it could be read all over the world, just like Wikipedia. A user would choose a language and whenever text was called to display it would point to database files in that language. The goal would be to have all human knowledge about space to be in enough languages to be accessible by all of humanity.

Begin navigation with birds eye view of solar system. Back out to see birds eye view of Orions arm or galaxy. The 3D of space full of stars above and below each other would have to be depicted. Drill down and fly down from above solar system plane to visit planets in their orbits around the sun.

An artist painting of what Pluto might look like would be included now and actual photos from the New Horizons mission would be included later.

The software needs to be developed that will be used to populate the database. Perhaps a combination of a Wiki similar to what is used with Wikipedia, and mapping software like what is used by Google Maps.

The site needs to be hosted. The high resolution photos could require significant bandwidth and data storage needs.

A sample needs to be started up for people to try out and get the general idea of the purpose of the site. Good candidates would be our Moon, Mars, or the Saturn system.

The site needs to be promoted space groups so that thousands of people contribute data to the site. In this way many people around the world will hear of it and begin to use it and contribute to it. It will then start to take off like Wikipedia did.

The end goal would be for all human knowledge about everything in the Universe except the Earth (all of outer space) would be in Google Earth and any person of any age anywhere on Earth could surf the site. By simple navigation they could fly over and look upon real landscapes of solar system bodies.

Become central website for human knowledge on space, like the public is using wikipedia as. Most knowledge of the solar system is based on factual evidence so hopefully their wont be too many disputes over content like there are with political issues in Wikipedia.

Also show technology needed to reach and settle space.

NXE and Archos Test

VN:F [1.8.3_1051]

Since I’m not online until 19/11/08 I can’t upload my clips to the Skate Reel site.
So instead I decided to try out recording video on my Archos 504 which I’ve had for about 2 years now and never bothered to use!
Made a quick skate vid but also included snippets of the NXE beta that I have on my 360 Elite.
PS the Archos is set to medium and produced big files with poor quality. Think I’ll stick with the crappy flv’s from skate reel.
PPS Also used 2 songs from the upcoming Skate 2 for anyone interested.
Archos test 2 can now be found here:
